27 kilometers from Yogya, on the southern shores of
Java, the beach town of Parangtritis lures travelers
with its black sand, spectacular surf, and fascinating
history. The beach is renowned in local mythology as the
home of the Queen of the South Seas, the beautiful but
dangerous woman who makes her kingdom below the waves
and who is the spiritual consort of the Sultans of
Yogyakarta. Even today, Javanese will not wear green,
the favorite color of the Queen, when visiting the
beach, for fear that they will be taken down into her
watery realm. Near the beach are a number of hot springs
and caves considered to be magical places for mystical
meditation.
