The 9th century temple of Borobudur,
located some 40 kilometers to the northwest of Yogya, is one
of the most spectacular sights in all of Indonesia, if not
anywhere in the world. The massive stone monument, one of
the most important Buddhist temples in Asia, is built as a
series of platforms, four square and three circular, ringed
by walkways and connected by steps. The temple was designed
as a representation of the universe that could be walked
through by worshippers. The lower levels of the temple are
intricately carved with scenes from everyday life, with all
its turmoil and desire. The upper levels are crowned with
statues of Buddhas praying serenely.
The best time to visit
Borobudur is at sunrise or sunset, when the temple is gilded
with golden color and the air is fresh. There are a number
of hotels around the temple, including a boutique hotel
offering the ultimate in both worldly luxuries and space for
tranquil contemplation.
