South Sumatra is
one of the most important provinces in Sumatra. It is
economically vital, producing vast quantities of oil,
natural gas, coal, tin, quartz, coffee, and tea. Its
capital, Palembang, is the region’s commercial hub, a
thriving, modern center of commerce. But the province is
rich in other kinds of wealth as well. Its high mountain
peaks, extensive mangrove swamps, and pristine beaches host
an amazing variety of flora and fauna.
Culturally,
South Sumatra boasts a fascinating range of local arts,
crafts, and traditions. The islands of Bangka and Belitung
are also part of the province. These unspoiled jewels,
accessible by direct air service from Jakarta, Medan and
Batam, are fast becoming renowned for their fabulous beaches
and fine accommodations.
