Biak
Island, located in the cool Pacific waters off the north
coast of mainland Irian Jaya, is fast becoming a favorite
destination for travelers drawn to its palm fringed white
sand beaches and fascinating cultural attractions. Divers,
especially, are being lured by Biak’s growing reputation
as one of the most spectacular spots in Indonesia for underwater
exploration.
Kota
Biak, the capital of the island, is a small, comfortable
city, offering travelers a range of accommodations, from
modest hotels to luxurious international standard properties.
The city has a number of art shops and markets offering
a fine range of Irianese crafts, as well as regular performances
of native dance. In the villages around the city, visitors
can witness an age-old way of life, and can even arrange
to see a traditional feast or fire-walking dance. In the
tranquil town of Bosnik, which boasts a five star beach
resort, visitors can swim in crystal clear waters and relax
in true tropical style.
