Nusa Tenggara | Komodo Area
The
tiny island of Komodo, tucked in between Flores and Sumbawa
in the Flores Sea, boasts one of the wildest, rarest, most
unforgettable attractions in the world: dragons. The Komodo
Dragon, a monitor lizard which grows up to four meters in
length, is the direct descendant of creatures who roamed
the earth half a million years ago.
Today,
these beasts remain only on Komodo and on the nearby islands
of Rinca and Padar, and are protected by the Indonesian
park service and other conservationist groups. Less than
2,000 of them roam the island freely, offering adventurous
travelers a fascinating glimpse of the earth’s prehistoric
past. Visitors can arrange trips to witness the dragons
- which despite their size and ferocious features pose no
threat to humans - and can stay overnight on the island
in basic park accommodations.
Komodo
Island also offers some other interesting activities, including
snorkeling in dolphin filled seas, or climbing to the 500
meter peak of Mount Ara for spectacular views of the lush
valley below.
