South Kalimantan is
one of the island’s most densely populated provinces, with its
inhabitants - both the indigenous Dayaks and transmigrants from
other Java and other Indonesian islands - numbering over three
million. Most of the population is concentrated in the capital
of Banjarmasin, a fascinating town, much of which is built over
water. The province is an important economic center for diamond
mining, timber, and rattan. Banjarmasin offers travelers
comfortable accommodations, interesting attractions, and a
convenient base from which to explore the colorful indigenous
villages that surround it.
The South Kalimantan countryside is
rich in cultural and natural attractions as well. The Meratus
Mountains in the northeast of the province offer splendid
trekking through deep green forested hills criss-crossed with
rivers and dotted with lakes, caves and waterfalls. Around the
tranquil mountain town of Loksado are a number of Dayak
villages, where visitors are welcome to witness the indigenous
inhabitants practicing a way of life that dates back centuries.
