As the capital of Central Java province, Semarang is
a busy, bustling center of government and commerce. But
despite its modern duties, Semarang still retains much
of its old world charm. One of the city’s most
intriguing attractions is its old Chinatown, whose
streets are filled with shops and a traditional market
selling all manner of exotic wares, as well as an 18th
century Chinese temple, one of the best examples of its
kind in Indonesia.
Semarang is also renowned as a center
of production for jamu, traditional Javanese
herbal medicines which promise to enhance beauty and
cure ills. The major factories have museums open to
visitors. Semarang’s hotels offer travelers all the
modern conveniences, from luxurious guest rooms to
swimming pools to bowling alleys.
Semarang is famous for
its cuisine, especially for Chinese delicacies, and the
Dutch style coffee shop Toko Oen, whose menu and décor
remain unchanged since the colonial era, is a
fascinating attraction in its own right.
