The city of Jambi
is the province’s business hub, serving the timber, oil,
paper, rubber and palm oil industries. It is a busy town
that still maintains a laid back atmosphere, despite its
modern façade. The Provincial Museum offers visitors an
excellent introduction to the arts and culture of the region.
The area’s major attraction is located about 25 kilometers
out of town at Muara Jambi. Here visitors can explore the
largest and most important Hindu-Buddhist archeological
site in Sumatra, a fascinating complex of eight temples
and hundreds of statues and artifacts, dating back to the
9th to 13th centuries.
Travelers to
Jambi can also shop for exquisite regional crafts, including
the province’s specialty, batik cloth dyed in traditional
floral motifs. Jambi’s accommodations include three star
hotels, and its restaurants offer Chinese, Western and spicy
Sumatran delicacies.
