The city of Jakarta is divided into over a dozen
districts, from exclusive residential neighborhoods to
industrial areas to the busy downtown streets. Most
travelers make their base the central business district,
which hosts the city’s commercial activities as well
as its luxury hotels and restaurants, including a number
of five star properties whose services are equal to any
in the world.
For an introduction to Indonesian culture,
Jakarta offers a wealth of excellent museums and
performance venues, including the Jakarta History
Museum, the Wayang Museum (which displays a priceless
collection of Asian shadow puppets), the Balai Seni Rupa,
or Fine Arts Museum, the National Museum, the Textile
Museum, and the National History Museum. Taman Ismail
Marzuki is Jakarta’s cultural center, offering
performances nightly, and the Ragunan Zoo is home to
exotic wildlife from all over the archipelago.
Taman
Mini is a huge park displaying the arts, culture,
architecture and cuisine of Indonesia’s provinces,
while Ancol is a massive amusement complex consisting of
an art market, oceanarium, sea world, swimming pool
complex, beach, and children’s park.
