At the foot of
Gunung Agung, Bali's highest active volcano, lies the
coastal village of Tulamben. Tulamben village is famous as the
home of the legendary wreck of the USAT Liberty, an American
warship torpedoed by a Japanese submarine on January 11,
1942 in the strait of Lombok.
The wreck was
damaged further by the eruption of Gunung Agung in 1963,
which broke the vessel in half. The ship is now a major
diving spot and home to an immense variety of fish that take
refuge from the tides and currents in vessel's ghostly hull.
Located only about 30 yards from shore, the wreck is easily
accessible to strong swimmers, though the locals can take
you there by jukung - multi-colored outrigger
sailboats.
Recently a
number of large and small hotels have been built to take
advantage of this unique and historical spot. Enjoy a meal
of fresh grilled fish on the beach after a day in the
sparkling ocean.

Mimpi
Resort Tulamben
Like all the
north coast villages, there are no lush rice fields
here - Mt. Agung and the other mountains steal the rain,
which comes from moisture-laden air that blows in from
the south. Thus South Bali is the island's rice bowl.
What brings people
to Tulamben however, is not visible from above water.
People come here to dive and explore the fantastic underwater
world of Tulamben Bay.
The Mimpi Resort
Tulamben is the ideal place to start the explorations. |
