Kemenuh is a
major carving center where Bali's world-famous artisans
practice their craft. The mythic figures they carve - the
legendary characters of the Hindu epics Mahabarata and
Ramayana - are often three meters tall and demonstrate a
level of technique and skill that has not been seen in the
West since the days of the Italian Renaissance.
Statues of
Garuda, the mythic bird of the Ramayana, Saraswati, the
goddess of Art and Culture, Laksmi, the Goddess of
Prosperity, and ever present Buddhas are found in all sizes
carved from rare tropical hardwoods. Often an entire family
is involved in the creation of these statues, with even
small children and octogenarian grandmothers helping out
with sandpaper. Kemenuh is being developed with great
sensitivity to the environment, and travelers can witness
how the Balinese are working to create a sustainable system
for future generations.
Kemenuh is a
wonderful place to explore Balinese culture in depth, and
you can even purchase a set of carving tools for yourself
and perhaps learn a few tricks from the artisans, who make
woodcarving look deceptively easy.
