Gianyar city,
the capital of Gianyar district, is a relaxed town that,
unlike many cities in Bali, is an idea place to explore on
foot. Gianyar is home to a beautiful traditional palace, the
home of Ida Anak Agung Gede Agung, the tenth raja of Gianyar.
This is the most complete Balinese traditional palace in
existence, and it exemplifies the East Bali court style.
While closed to the general public, many of the ornate inner
gates and pavilions are visible from the street. Most
remarkable is the Kori Agung Gate which protects and
obscures the view of the largest courtyard. You might get
lucky and arrive on the day of a cremation, when the doors
are open and the inner chamber is visible from the road.
Raised up on stilts is the Bale Bengong, a large pavilion
which is one of the oldest parts of the palace complex; the
others were been destroyed during wars against neighboring
Klungkung the Dutch.
Gianyar is also
home to some of Bali's finest ikat weavers, whose workshops
are never far from the main roads. The villages of Gianyar
district offer a glimpse of Bali’s traditional way of life
and unspoiled rural scenery.
