Amed - the remote
corner of Eastern Coast of Bali is quickly becoming popular due to its
remarkably unspoiled and secluded beaches. You will find
excellent diving and snorkeling here - you might even spot a
huge, but harmless, plankton-eating whale shark.
The views in
Amed are spectacular - to the east is the island of Lombok
with the towering mountain of Gunung Rinjani. Inland to the
west is a view of Bali's own active volcano, Gunung Agung.
The country inland is rugged and drier than other regions in
Bali, and the countryside near Gunung Lempuyang is home to
villages of great antiquity. Many of the local villagers
work extracting salt from the sea - lined up in rows at
seaside are the wooden troughs they use to facilitate the
evaporation process.
Most of the
population work as fisherman and they are more than happy to
take a visitor out on one of their traditional boats. Drop a
fishing line in the ocean and try your hand at catching a
delicious dinner!
