Off the wild
coast of Aceh, like green jewels set in the deep blue of the
Indian Ocean, are a series of islands that draw intrepid
travelers in search of unspoiled beaches, spectacular coral
reefs, and some of the best diving and snorkeling anywhere.
Pulau We, just north of the capital of Banda Aceh, is the
most popular of these, boasting a reef known as the “Sea
Garden” and a number of dive centers. Accommodations are
basic.
Off the west
coast are a string of small islands called simply the Pulau
Banyak or “many islands,” most of them uninhabited. Here
travellers can find simple accommodations on palm-fringed
white sand beaches, authentic local seafood, and incredible
snorkeling through crystal clear waters. For those
interested in environmental issues, a group called the
Turtle Foundation on Bangkaru Island organizes tours to see
the giant green leatherback turtles.
